But because I do, yes I would try to catch it. Wouldn’t matter if I did get my finger in the trigger guard and squeezed the trigger while catching it.
Without belaboring the point, I feel obligated to say that these are both very dangerous practices for reasons which have apparently been pointed out by others.

Practices that can be readily shown to increase a hazard and can't be shown to be reasonable are, to put it very mildly, inadvisable.

I believe that any gun, can go off at any time, announced or unannounced, when dropped.

To believe anything else, is to lull myself into a false sense of security and start disregarding the rules of gun safety.

That's how I feel and I'm unanimous in that statement
To understand the mechanics of a gun and know that they cannot just "go off at any time" is not a false sense of security.

To believe this way is to ignore logic.
Dihappy is technically correct.

However, Joe817 may well have meant that treating every gun as if it could go off any time when dropped. If so, that's an approach that's hard to argue with and won't get you into nearly as much potential trouble as acting differently after thinking too hard about when it might discharge and when it might not.

My Kimber has a firing pin block that retains it until the trigger is pulled (and grip safety depressed). Be that as it may... ...I don't drop it.

My Springfield beats the problem by having a titanium firing pin which doesn't weigh enough to overcome the inertia of the spring when dropped. I choose not to drop it either.

I replaced the firing pin in my pre series II Kimber with a titanium model and installed a stronger firing pin spring to reduce the risk of an inertial discharge if a dropped gun hit the floor just right.
