In the enlarged picture you can see that many of the unexplained cuts in the target are similar in size and shape.
I'd like to see the process repeated with a backstop that captures the projectiles so we could see what the odd holes are being caused by and what the main body of the fired projectile looks like after it's lost some pieces (if that's what's happening.)

Re: S&W M&P issues - Chris Costa
I'm not clear on what the photo is illustrating.
There's nothing remarkable about the groups that I can see.
The closeup appears to show impacts from projectiles that are much smaller than 9mm projectiles.
If these marks came from the shots, the only explanation I can think of is that the bullet jackets are separating in flight. That would be most unusual. I couldn't say a gun couldn't cause that, but I'd have to think a bit to figure out how. The first thing I would look at would be ammunition, but Chris indicates that it's happening with 3 different brands and that barrels are also failing catastrophically.
The other unusual thing is that I can't find any recent reports of similar issues by anyone else. A web search turned up nothing. Of course it could be a new problem with a recently manufactured batch, but Chris doesn't tell us which models are involved.
We need more info to make heads or tails of this. Has anyone seen any further info on what Chris believes is happening here?
