SlowDave wrote:I always enjoy this discussion. But most of all, the "an unloaded gun is as useful as a hammer" (sometimes substitute "rock" for "hammer") and "the bad guy is not going to wait for you to chamber a round, you will be dead," responses. To those authors I would say, you have just destroyed your own credibility with me, and possibly 1 or 2 others on here. If you believe the first response, I'll be happy to stand 20 yards apart, me with a pistol with no round in the chamber, and you with a rock, and we'll have it out. To the second response, I am happy that you are able to see into the future into what kind of confrontation you will encounter.
Why in the world do I want to challenge you with a rock or a hammer? Your implication is that instead of an unloaded gun, the majority of posters on this forum would prefer a rock or a hammer. This logic escapes me.

On the second issue, no I am not prescient. That is EXACTLY why I try to be ready for any kind of encounter that the bad guy can dream up. In my mind, one less action to take is just that much more of an edge that I may or may not have over whoever is trying to ruin my day.

And as a final point...I feel perfectly safe with my loaded firearm on or about me. I continually remind myself to watch where I put my fingers when grabbing it, as too much comfort can lead to laxness in regards to safety.

I think it just seems like it would be easy to accidental fire the weapon due to the simplicity of the trigger pull. Most get over the concern after owning a Glock and firing it a few times. At some point it suddenly becomes apparent that it is no different than any gun...Pull the trigger and it will fire...LOL.

I can definitely understand how a person would feel a double action revolver or true double action semi-auto might be more forgiving of accidently touching the trigger.
In my mind, if you haven't already you had better start cultivating the habit of keeping your booger-hook away from the trigger at all times until and unless you intend to pull it. Alot of novices to firearms are simply drawn to put their little nub on the trigger the instant that they pick it up.

I couldn’t believe my BIL who was a Marine (and has a CHL) actually gave me a hard time about it. I began to wonder if Marines carry their sidearms un-chambered, so I asked my Dad, who was also a Marine, but he said he never carried a sidearm when he was in the Corps…..though he was pretty sure they would be carried chambered.
I was a Marine and a Soldier. We never carried one in the chamber when in Garrison (Stateside). Even in Afghanistan it was frowned upon on the FOB, but they couldn't enforce it with my team (Special Operations, we were an attached unit). So I carried locked and loaded on and off base over there.

I checked the rotation. It was my turn.

Re: Do you carry with a round loaded in the Chamber?

What is a "safety"?

I own Glocks, an XD and a MDE. The only safety that I am aware of is the trigger.

Do you carry with a round loaded in the Chamber?

I noticed that some posters still question whether or not they should carry a round in the chamber. I felt that it would be interesting to see what the actual general consensus is regarding the issue.
