There are different models, but no adapter is required.
The CX4 comes in the "92" version that takes Beretta 92 Magazines and the "PX4" version that takes the Beretta PX4 Storm Magazines. Both come in 9mm and .40 caliber.
Also, when the CX4 came out, it was offered in the (then) Beretta Cougar platform and the 92/96 platform. So an uninformed customer might buy the wrong one. The .45 was only offered in the Cougar platform and the only mag offered was the 8 round pistol mag.
Since the Cougar was vanquished to Stoeger, this may be why they offer a PX4 version.
