Whenever I hear these situations, there's tons of "could have/should have" that you can rehash.

The most important thing is, 1) you didn't have to shoot anybody and 2) you didn't get hurt or shot yourself.
3) You didn't end up in jail is also a good one.

considering you meet all 3, I think on that alone you did perfectly well.
