Thankfully you can carry a gun out in the field. I'm "defenseless" at our field offices, and our home office, not to mention the fact that our safety guys and auditors as well, and we actually go out in the field and check on rigs.... out in the boonies, such as you described. It's a very good thing for you that you didn't have to go past the threshold you already set for yourself, and pull your gun to try and stop the guy, considering, as you said, looked like a typical crack-head and would do anything to get out of his "cornered position".
