If you Houston area guys can get 5 or more people together who want a Utah license, then I could schedule a weekend trip down there, visit my baby girl in College Station, and help y'all out too.

Utah has the same duty as Texas to issue the license within 60 days. Right now, they are averaging 67 days, and know they are not in compliance.

If you already have a Texas CHL, include a copy of it with your application, and you may receive your license in about 2 weeks.

OK, for all interested in the Utah CFP (Concealed Firearms Permit), I am just off the plane and have the info. I will try to answer all the questions I remember have been asked, but if I miss yours, just let me know.

First, why do I want a Utah permit?

Because it is a cheap and easy way to add 2 more reciprocal states, Washington and Ohio. Those are the only ones on the "official list" right now that Texas does not have, but it is currently under review by the Utah DPS.
Also, you can get a Utah permit and carry in Texas even if you don’t meet the Texas CHL eligibility requirements due to delinquent child support, state taxes, or student loans.

How much does it cost?

The license fee is $59, and is good for 5 years. The license expires 5 years from the date if issuance, and has nothing to do with your birthday. The renewal fee is $10, and there is no requirement for a renewal class.

What about the class?

Utah requires a class for new applicants to cover handgun familiarity, safe handling and storage, differences in ammunition, shooting fundamentals, and federal and state laws. There is NO shooting proficiency test and NO written test.

The Texas CHL new and renewal classes both meet the minimum requirements of the Utah license class, with the exception of Utah laws. I will offer the Utah license option in each Texas CHL class for an additional $25, to cover the additional fingerprint card and photo. It will take about an additional half hour at the end of class to cover the Utah laws and application process. If you already have your Texas CHL and just want the Utah license, then sign up for a regular Texas renewal class and let me know you need the Utah license instead. The cost will be the standard Texas renewal class fee of $70.

When is the class?

The first class will be held as soon as possible after I get my Utah instructor’s permit in the mail. Right now, it looks like December 2, the first Saturday. If I get the permit before then, I will let you all know. The entire Utah CFP department consists of only 5 people, and they are even more overwhelmed than the Texas DPS with applications right now. They promised to do their best to get instructor apps processed within 30 days. After the first class, the Utah license will be offered as an option with each Texas CHL. I teach at least one class a month.

I'm not sure yet, cause I don't know what our cost will be. I charge $100 for the Texas CHL, so I was planning on, if you take the Texas class, to just add Utah to it for the additional cost of the extra photos, prints, and whatever else Utah requires.

If you already have a Texas CHL, then probably $75 as a stand alone class. It looks like they actually don't require as much training as Texas does, but of course, you have to learn their laws and pass their written test. I don't think there is a shooting test at all.

Like I said, I'm not 100% sure on all the details yet. How about if I get back to you on October 15 when I get back?

I don't have a recommendation for you right now, but if you can wait until October, I will be a Utah instructor then.
