If you want to keep the finish nice, keep it in the safe. Signs of wear are like scars--they're a sign of hard-earned experience. I was saddened the day my longtime Glock was replaced by the factory. The uniform black steel didn't have nearly the character that my well-worn, well-carried, and well-loved pistol had.

I'd choose a holster for how well it does its job of holding your pistol securely when carrying it and giving it to you when you want it. That's not to say a leather holster can't win that test, but finish protection would be at the bottom of my list of qualities to evaluate in a holster.
