I know there are individuals who walk around selling a gun or two, but I thought the booths selling guns had to be FFL's and had to run the background check? Don't get me wrong, I don't like gvt intereference period, but I just assumed this was already a BATF rule.
nope. I've seen a lot of "private sale" tables at gun shows. The last gun I bought was from an individual with a table. These tables and people walking around are about the only place to find a real gem of a deal. You really have to look through some overpriced junk but there are deals to be found. The big boys selling new stuff have a store to take the stuff back to if they don't sell it - I have not found them to be that much cheaper at show.

GeoJAP wrote:Darwin Boedeker, owner and promoter of Texas Gun Shows (http://texasgunshows.net/default.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;), went on the radio today for more than 2 hours to tell his side of the story about what happened. I'm pasting the show in YouTube segments below.

The APD called Darwin and the HEB representative to have a 2 hour meeting last Thursday. The building on Lamar Blvd is owned by Wal-Mart and the primary lease holder is HEB. There were several APD detectives and an ATF agent there. They told Darwin that they would like for him to follow their suggestions, which were to ban firearms sales except through FFLs. The police then told Darwin that there were ongoing investigations into his business for activity over the last 10 years of allegedly allowing sales to ineligible buyers. Darwin responded by asking them if they were aware that his company, Texas Gun Shows, is different than Saxet Gun Shows, which is who they were talking about. APD didn't even realize this and were confused for a bit. Then APD put pressure on the HEB representative, and together the APD, ATF and HEB representative told Darwin that he would not be allowed to open the show if he did not follow their recommendations, which were to create the flyer you've seen and ban sales that didn't accompany an NICS check. Two of his biggest vendors canceled and he expects attendance to be down by over 50% next month.

This guy needs our support. He is a 2nd Amendment supporter and is running a family business. The ATF and APD are basically destroying his business with their unlawful "suggestions". APD has no statutory authority for what they are doing to this man. They are literally running him out of town by destroying his business and livelihood. Nothing that he is doing is illegal. He said that he will not be able to stay in business if this continues. We need to go to the next show February 20/21 and not let them kill the Austin gun show.

The police also made a big show to intimidate people at the gun show. A vendor was placed in handcuffs by APD and lead through the crowd for everyone to see. He was taken outside but was released and not arrested.

Interview on Alex Jones radio show (say what you want about Alex, but he's a die-hard 2nd Amendment supporter):

" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Probably the best way to help save this guys business is to help him find another location in Austin. Of course it would have to be a Landlord that has the internal fortitude to stand up to APD. I just don't see how a gun show in Texas makes it with a ban on private sales regardless of how supportive we want to be. The only other option I see is a lot of pressure on HEB. Protest signs in front of HEBs accross TX stating "HEB does not support your 2nd ammendment rights" might get the Butt's attention.

Re: Austin Gun Show Troubles?

Sure would like to see a statement/response from HEB. I have never stood in front of a store with a protest sign before but I sure would be game this time. :rules:

Re: Austin Gun Show Troubles?

If it turns out that the building owner (I believe someone said HEB) is the bg here I think that the focus should be on them. I wonder what the impact on HEB would be if gun owners took all of their business elsewhere. I know HEB has gotten a lot of our money. That could change real quick.

BTW, just told my wife about this and her comment was "if HEB is behind it, or didn't have the nerve to fight it, they won't be getting anymore of my money".
