Avoid if you can and try to make them show their intentions. Pulling is the last option and not letting them get inside that 20 or so feet is the first.

And remember that it isn't always "The Type" that you may expect doing the bad things. Male, female, young, old, pants on the ground or around the armpits, etc... The only time I have ever had a gun pulled on me (1992) was from a group of maybe 12 year olds in NC. I can't tell if the gun was real because I got back in my car and drove off. I think the kid was just showing off but I didn't ask and don't care. Avoid if you can.
