I noticed that, too.hobbes wrote:I found it more than a little ironic to open the paper this afternoon and see that the house tacked a statewide smoking ban as an amendment to a fiscal bill. Yet campus carry was ruled out of order in that scenario!

Re: HB 3639 - SB 1581
Yup. Focusing on the extreme worst case scenario just plays into their tactic to paint us as vigilantes. Most people, especially antis, want to stick their heads in the sand and pretend It'll Never Happen To Me. So our Be Prepared, Boy Scout motto approach to life is something they can't relate to... and we wind up looking (in their minds) like we're looking for a fight.pnctar wrote:Totally ... just the approach.J.R.@A&M wrote:My main thought about 2013 campus carry is to frame it more in terms of deterrence/prevention of general violent crime, both on an off campus, versus focusing on the mass shooting/Va Tech scenario. The other side appeared to be successful in framing the issue as "making the campus safer" and pointing out that mass shootings are rare. The point is to make individuals safer (or at least give them the choice). The "campus" is just a geographical abstraction.
Sticking to the more routine, high frequency, and widespread crimes on campus is more likely to appear relevant. Work on the higher odds of them being affected by a mugging or rape or carjacking instead of Virginia Tech. Then the other side of the coin... who are these CHL people? Let's put some faces and profiles out there, personalize this (in a good way).

Mine is Mario Gallegos. For the first time in my life, I'm planning on volunteering for a campaign- whoever runs against him. Anyone else in Houston want to step up to help?der Teufel wrote:Well, it's frustrating but I'm not sure I want to automatically throw out the incumbent without knowing who the alternative is. I'm in Wentworth's district, and I'm inclined to keep him. I think he did his best, given the framework of rules in which he had to work. I believe he'll continue to try accomplish the things we all want, the freedom to exercise our 2nd amendment rights.
Before I consider voting for someone else, they're going to have to do a LOT of convincing as to how they could do better.
Those who have other senators and representatives may feel differently.

Heck, and follow that up requiring metal detectors and armed guard if they want to ban (legal) handguns. And/or liability to the private business/universities for the consequences to defenseless individuals of any criminal behavior on the premises.

Sarah Davis will try for a carve-out of Houston medical center teaching hospitals, assuming the current wording of the SB 1581 campus carry amendment doesn't do that already.hirundo82 wrote: (4 Amendments by Christian) <==HB750 cosponsor

Wonder how many of those are related to Campus Carry, versus funding/Money for this or that
There were lots of amendments in the Senate on it prior to Campus Carry .... so dunno

SB 5 is up in the House. Wentworth's amendment was removed, but rumor has it a House member may try to put guns-on-campus back on again.

It's a nice idea, and one that'd be much appreciated by a number of people here, but at this stage in the game we have to stay focused on just getting the durn thing passed!WacoCarry wrote:PLEASE AMMEND IT TO COVER PRIVATE SCHOOLS AS WELL!!!!!
Adding private schools would have to be scheduled for a future session - unless people have more hidden up their sleeves than I'm aware of.
