I use one of those Cabelas lock boxes and they work well for what you're describing. I took a handgun into Kalifornia in the minivan on a family road trip last summer and stored it in one of those boxes. As for ammo, depends how much you're carrying. If just enough to fill you mags, then get a second Cabelas box and put the ammo in it. If you plan to carry a few hundred rounds (for target practice or whatever) just use an ammo can with a padlock - an MTM CaseGuard or Action Products brand (both plastic, both available at Academy) should work fine.chasfm11 wrote:

What should I use for a lockable ammo case? Keep in mind that RVs don't have a lot of space and that I'm trying to keep the weight down, too. Just "getting by" is OK by me.
Also, I ended up replacing the keyed lock on those Cabelas boxes with a "Combi Cam" combination lock. Very easy do-it-yourself installation. You can buy them at Amazon.com but I've also seen them advertised at RV supply outlets like this one http://www.rvtoyoutlet.com/p-RVW1057.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; For replacing the key lock cylinder in those Cabelas boxes, the 5/8 size Combi Cam works well.
With practice, I can turn the dials to my combo, open the box, and have my gun in hand just by touch in pitch black night conditions (I keep a Glock with tac light on my bedside table in one of these boxes to keep the gun inaccessible to my kids).
