A couple of weeks listening to a scanner will really open your eyes as to how many crimes you never hear about by any other means.

I once kept a list of what was going on over a weekend; leaving out the speeding tickets, barking dogs, etc, and only counting actual property damage, theft or bodily injury offenses, it was still more than you'd find reported in the newspaper over 2-3 months. (Of course, the paper's jail log only lists actual arrests, so most criminal mischief, theft, and minor assaults with no arrests made don't get coverage unless the victim is important enough.)

In "Shooting in Realistic Environments," IIRC, he even specifies that a miss may be combat accurate if it causes the attacker to flee.
