I would chalk this up to just pain being irresponsible, but as soon as did I would probably do something similar. However, I have not flown anywhere in the last ten years where my CHL was honored. I prefer to drive whenever possible and even then most of my travel is to places that do honor my CHL, which is even better. The only place with family that I do visit that does not is Illinois, but we drive and just disarm in MO before crossing the river. Funny thing about this is that we will go out shooting on their property/farm without any problems from local LE.
