I'm sure you did learn a lesson that day, but I'd bet your brother learned a bigger, more sobering, and lasting lesson. Upon learning that it was loaded with a round in the chamber, I bet he sat down for a bit after all the blood drained from his face.

I'm thinking it is merely ignorance about a particular subject. So many people never receive even a basic education about firearms. A basic understanding is about all I got as a kid and got to go shooting about once every 2-3 years. The two most important things and just about all I knew; the gun is always unloaded until checked at least twice and keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot.
