Re: DFW Skeet Shoot—POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER....
I was going to drive by Elm Fork a couple of days ago and see what the status of the water levels were, but a sign on the road said, "high water, closed." And there was water all over the golf course on the fairways where it usually is not. It might not re-emerge or be dry enough for at least a couple more weeks.

Skeet shooting from boats would definitely increase the difficulty level.jminn1 wrote:Bummer. I was really looking forward to shooting this weekend, but IMO this is the right call.
Quack Quack.
Somebody send in the boats!
Be safe over the weekend everyone!

In that case, I'm back in depending upon my new work schedule. The Annoyed Man wrote:You guys, I agree. I think we should cancel and try to reschedule after the rains finally stop.

You realize they are so named because they are located on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. Web site says they are currently CLOSED DUE TO FLOOD.
Last time we had this much rain, several years ago, they were closed for weeks before the water went down.
Are they even still open? And do they have a shotgun skeet area? I'm thinking this might have been a joke from the Joker.

Re: Time for Another Elm Fork Skeet Shoot
I just received the standing for our league and we are seeded first, as expected. They said the playoff schedule should be out later today. Our games have all been on Wednesdays and Sundays, so if they stick to that schedule, the 30th may be open for me. I'll let you know.

At this moment, yes, but ...The Annoyed Man wrote:Would you be available for the 30th?C-dub wrote:I'll be helping another friend with his church group do a trap shoot at our club on the 23rd. You guys have a great time and I'll catch the next one.
The playoff schedule for one of H-dub's softball teams comes out this week and that could change. That league still had two games to make up from earlier rained out games. We think they are going to end the season with the records the teams have without those two games and get the playoffs going as soon as they can when the fields are dry enough to play. Looking at the forecast, with at least a 30% chance of rain every day for another week, there's no telling when that will happen at this time.
Her team is the only undefeated team in the league this year and she's the only catcher and has almost half the teams RBI's. They are the favorites to be the champions this year. None of their games have been close.
I would feel badly if this were scheduled for the 30th and then I couldn't make that either. If the majority can make it on the 23rd, go ahead with that and then if that is rained out maybe we can try again on the 30th.

Don't let her fool you boys. She's a ringer.Crossfire wrote:I thought I had some idea how this skeet thing worked until you posted all those diagrams. Now, I realize I don't know squat! All this time I've just had a "point in the general direction of the bird and shoot" kinda philosophy.
Have not picked up a shotgun since thumb replacement in December, and ready to try it out. If available on the day y'all pick, I am in!

I'm sure they do. They've done it in competition, so they gotta follow the rules pretty strict.AndyC wrote:Can they do it from gun-down like you and I shoot?C-dub wrote:I haven't shot a perfect 25 yet, but many of my friends at my gun club have. Re: Time for Another Elm Fork Skeet Shoot
I haven't shot a perfect 25 yet, but many of my friends at my gun club have. Several have even shot a perfect 100 in four rounds straight. One, recently, is a 14y old girl. We have quite a few teens in our club that compete all over the place in shotgun and another group that go to Camp Perry and other places for rifle competitions. My best so far is 22, I think.

Re: Time for Another Elm Fork Skeet Shoot
The nice thing about skeet is that they always fly in the same direction and same speed, unlike real birds. The only weird thing clays do is jump up or down due to whatever wind hits them.drjoker wrote:I don't know how to skeet shoot a shotgun. I mean, how much do you lead in front of the clay? If you don't mind teaching a novice, I'll tag along. Thanks.
The leads are pretty well known for each station, so it's just a matter of remembering each one and proper technique when moving the shotgun. For the two stations on each side the leads are from almost nothing to about a foot. As you get closer to the center or middle stations the leads move out to about three feet. Whether your aim is above or below the clay depends on what its trajectory will be at the point of impact. Since it is not a laser beam, your aim will almost always be above or below the clay itself. Simple, right?
You'd think so, but I keep missing some that seem really easy and just boggle my mind. C'mon out and have some fun.
For everyone's information, Elm Fork's restrictions on shotguns for trap or skeet shooting is that the barrel must be at least 21" long.

Re: Time for Another Elm Fork Skeet Shoot
That's okay. I'm expecting a healthy dose of shaming when either you or Pawpaw or Beiruty get me out to 200 yards or more with a rifle. I'm sure my time will come.
Actually, every time I hit the five-stand matches at my club it public shaming time. But, it sure is a lot of fun with those guys.

Re: Time for Another Elm Fork Skeet Shoot
I voted for the 30th. If the weather holds for tomorrow, I will either be at softball games or an IDPA match with my daughter tomorrow. And i'm already going to help another friend with a trap shoot at our club on the 23rd.
