To those with the belief that BG's will see your holstered weapon and try to grab it from you...
Do you really think BG's are that brave? 98% of criminals are cowards, just look at how many groups vs. 1 good guy goes when the good guy draws a gun. They scatter, even if they have a gun themselves. The BG isn't going to try to take your weapon from you for fear that he won't succeed and then end up with a few extra holes where there were none 30 seconds ago.
I believe that the chances of a BG trying to take a weapon out of someones holster is so remote that it should be nothing more than #5 on the checklist as you go through your awareness.

open carry would be my choice anyway.

The element of surprise? If 'lots' of people open carried, there would be no worry about surprise. what criminal in his right mind would try to rob a convenience store if every customer had a weapon?
