My 1911 compulsion began the moment I finally mustered up enough gumption to pull the trigger on my Grandfather's gun. By the time I had put 50 rounds through it, I had to get another box....and another...and another. After 200 rounds and not a single failure.....
I thaught to myself, "Man, Grandpa's gun is 88 years old, and shoots like that?". "Ah man....that means I'm a 1911 fan now." "How do I break it to Marlene? (my H&K)" Yeah, I name my guns....

I gotta tell ya, as a 5'11" man at 265 lbs I'm no small dude. I was a little iffy about the Ultra. I found that when using the mag that comes with it, my grip is a little compacted by the forward extension of the buttplate.
I replaced it with a few KimPro TacMags. They come with a short and long buttplate. Put the long buttplates on that mount flush with the front of the grip, and voila! A good grip on a small gun for a man with large hands.
O.K. so I liked it enough I absolutely had to find the solution. And for only $30 a piece...simple solution.

Well...I caught the bug!
I was a fanatic about my Heckler & Koch USP .45...
And carried it for about a year.
Until I got my first 1911 through less than happy circumstances. My Grandfather willed it to me.
I have the holster, and a couple 8 rd KimPro mags for it for range use only. It was, according to the serial number, made in 1919, and I would like to think that carrying it would be like having my Grandfather looking over me, but it simply means too much to give it the wear carrying involves. Although I do shoot it from time to time. The feel and accuracy made me interested in the 1911 pistol, so I started looking. I finally decided on the Kimber Tactical Ultra II as a carry replacement for the large H&K.
And Yes! I caught the bug! I still love my H&K, but to carry the Kimber. OMG! It is soooooo much easier to conceal, and soooooo much lighter to carry! Yes, it has only 8 rds versus the 13 rds of the H&K, but that just means carry 2 spare magazines. Besides, with less than 600 rds I do what I consider to be rather well with it.
If you had asked me a year ago of I would like to buy a 1911, I would have said "No Thanks". Now my response would be "If only I could afford another one".
Are there any other "Converts" here? And what is you conversion story?
