YOOHHH!!! WHOOOO!!!

Well, the planets aligned and today was the day ! !

Funny, I went to the mailbox, looked through the mail and no CHL. When I walked in the whole family said, "Did it come?" I said "UUGH, NO". Then, from the pile my son grabbed an envelope and said, "I think this may be it !" I had looked so hard I missed it ! !

In any case, it did arrive today !

Another bad day at the mailbox today......

I can't take it much longer ! !

I ordered a "gun belt" yesterday....it supposed to be "heavy" leather which does a better job of supporting the load of the holster, etc. My current leather belt likes to twist and sag when loaded with anything besides my fat butt ! !

Ok, see ya'll later.... ;-)

Speaking of DPS:

I've been working in business for 25 years. For the last 10-12 years I have been involved in "lean"....meaning doing more with less ! In these exercises, we do something called "process mapping". It's basically charting the "flow" of a process, from start to finish. It shows inputs, outputs, decision points, etc. etc.

It is AMAZING to see what the results are after a process mapping exercise. Its often times rediculous to see how many people are involved and the incredible waste there is in the system you are studying. Many don't even realize its so complicated and wasteful because, "thats the way we have always done it".

Ladies and Gents: I believe DPS is RIPE FOR A PROCESS MAPPING AND IMPROVEMENT EXERCISE ! ! If I had to guess, I bet we could fill up several walls with flip charts of the process our applications go through flying around in endless loops, stalls, and pigeon holes. I bet they have an office FULL of people doing the same thing every day with very little understanding of what they are doing beyond what they are told. This would become a virtual nightmare as people are out on vacation, medical leave, etc.

I dare to bet with a simple exercise process time could easily be reduced and with fewer people to do the job. This smells of ripe opportunity for improvement.

I know I'm preaching to the chior, even if you don't understand anything about what I've written, you certainly understand the frustration of a system that seems to have no rhythm.

While I'm at Academy I'll pick up some ammo, browse the firearms, pick up some targets, cleaning supplies, and, and, and, and.

OK, wife just woke me up !

Update !

My online "status" changed this morning from "Processing Application" to "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active". In my previous post, I had stated I called Tuesday and DPS said it was to be sent the next morning. So, I guess the Web status change indicates indeed the processing is complete.

I too can "keypad" my DL #, SSN, and PIN quickly after checking 3 times each day, (morning, afternoon, night...yeah I'm obsessed !).

Now, where the heck is that Mailman already ! ! ! ! ! !

Well, today is day #62. Checked status this morning and "Processing Application" once again. I've been patient....and I know others have waited longer....but I called DPS anyway to make sure I wasn't in some kind of "processing loop".

The lady put me on hold and came back about 2 minutes later and said "Found it...I'll mail it in the morning". I was wondering: "What happened to it? Where was it? What if I hadn't called?". But, rather than get it stuck back in the pile I told her "thanks for checking---have a nice day".

So....now to the mailbox everyday with great expectations ! !

Newbie....and waiting !

Well, figured I'd go ahead and chime-in here in the "waiting room" with the rest of you. I moved to Texas in July, been lurking here for a while as a guest, and have been a CHL in two other fine states and I have never seen the misery DPS puts us through ! ! In both of the other states, one was 3 weeks, the other 4 weeks. These times were consistent for all applicants. In one state the County Sheriff was responsible for issuing the permits, the State Police in the other. Seems to me as long as Texas has had CHL's, the process would be more "efficient".

Seeing my last issuing state has no agreement with Texas regarding sharing CHL's, I've been without since July. I do take some comfort in being able to have my weapon(s) with me when traveling in the vehicle though.

DPS recieved my packet February 1st....today it's still Processing.

Good to meet ya'll. Hope to see you at any of the fine ranges ! !

Scott
