That is assuming that shot placement worked. Realistically, if I were to shoot, it would probably be more of
a "mag-dump while retreating as quickly as I can" kinda deal.
This is my basic theory. I carry a FiveseveN with EA PenetraTOR ammo. (Of course my shooting buddies never hesitate to educate me about my poor choice in caliber) Personally, I am not one of those guys who would discount any caliber nor do I believe in magic bullets or magic body armor. If you can shoot straight and fast, you can stop most any threat. I carry the FiveseveN much more because it allows me to shoot straight and fast, than because I believe I will need to penetrate soft body armor. I tend to believe that if someone in that Colorado theater had been armed and able to dump 5-10 rounds of 9mm or greater, Holmes would have been stopped despite his armor.
I spend time at every range session practicing failure drills, and I think that two to the chest and one to the head with any decent caliber would have stopped Holmes, but that is just assumption of course.
The morning after this evil event, President Obama commented "my daughters love going to the movies. I keep thinking to myself, what if Sasha and (whatever the other one's name is) had been in that theater."
Well Mr. President, your daughters travel with a highly trained, heavily armed Secret Service detail who would have likely engaged and terminated Mr. Holmes the minute he entered the theater and threw the smoke grenade.
The real problem is not that Holmes was wearing soft armor, but that no one apparently was capable of engaging him with a weapon of any caliber. The first guys with guns that he ran into, the police in this case, he sat down and gave up. The gun control folks don't like that point of view.
