Re: There's your problem.....

It's like the old adage about boiling frogs. If you put a frog in hot water it will jump out, but put it in cold water and slowly turn up the heat and the frog will swim around until it is boiled.

Look how far our society has moved due to slow and steady pressure from special interest groups. In order to not get totally off topic in a gun forum, I won't mention specific examples, but today we debate and argue issues with all seriousness that would have been outrageous to even propose a couple of decades ago. At some point there will be a violent correction and society will snap back. Much like an earthquake where years of pressure has built up, it eventually corrects, and when it does it is not fun.

If you think about it though, gun rights advocates have done a great job of advancing our cause in the face of a hostile government and propagandizing media. When I was a boy, there was no concealed carry, and while it was common to have a .22lr or 12 gauge in a rifle rack, I didn't know anyone who carried a handgun in their truck. My Dad carried a Colt .38 special in his pocket and everyone who knew him considered him an oddball with violent tendencies (which he was). He was the exception in our town. I didn't know anyone who had an "assault" rifle and while everyone had a couple of hunting rifles, I did not know anyone with a real gun collection.

Today, we can open carry a pistol down main street if we so desire and most of my friends have gun collections that would have raised a lot of eyebrows back in the day. Granted, gun ownership is much more polarizing an issue today.

I have taken two lesson from this. First, we can never give up one inch of ground to those who would erode our rights or attempt to burden us with evil legislation. Those who would impose their will upon us will never be satisfied until we are totally consumed, so we must push back and never compromise, not even an inch. Secondly, none of our advances have happened by accident. It is due to the hard work of people like Mr. Cotton, the NRA, TSRA, and right-minded God-fearing citizens who stand by their principals.

Ultimately, Californians will have to decide what kind of a state they want to live in. We Texans must do the same.
