Was the bridge on 281 @ Marble Falls ever a metal, arched type? Other than the bridge type, this crossing perfectly matches the op's description. The bridge replacement work has been going on during my travels thru there. ??

You might google Pennybacker bridge; on hwy 360, on east side of Austin...matches your description..

Steveincowtown; check out where Highway 183 crosses the Guadalupe River in Cuero; metal arch type bridge, little more than half way, though....
