I was born and raised in El Paso; when I was a kid, the family would drive over for cheap cokes and groceries (60's); when a teenager we would go across to drink and party with friends (70's). As a younger man, many of us had propane conversions & tanks on our PU trucks for fuel because you could get it in Juarez cheap; fill up a 100 gallon tank for $30 and drive all month (80's-90's).
I left the area for work reasons; moved to DFW, then Corpus, then San Antonio, now Seguin. I tell people the only way I would cross the border now is if I was tied up in the back of someone's trunk...
