Well, I would've, and when he sobered up, I would have offered an option: go door-to-door apologizing to everyone, describing in detail what he did, or face the charges.

That scenario has been pretty well worked-out. Here's another real-world one. I've often thought about how I would handle this. Like in the original example, prevention and situational awareness are key here. This happened to a friend of mine about a year ago in a Wal-Mart parking lot at around 2:00...

If she doesn't shoot and doesn't have the fortitude for it, then she doesn't need a gun.
Until she uses and is comfortable with firearms, she needs mace or something like that.
