Actually, at 6 months, they will send you a letter with a PIN (Personal Identification Number).
You can go on-line and fill out the form(s) and pay the fee with a credit card. Then, they will send you a packet to take to the instructor when you take the renewal class and shoot. (Same written test, same shooting test - except we have new targets - move the bowling pin down and made it oval - the 8 ring on a standard shilloute).
If you are in a hurry, you can get forms (fingerprint cards, notary statements and photo card holder) from the instructor when you renew. You will still have to wait for the packet from DPS to arrive.
If you do not want to use the computer to renew/pay fees, you can call the DPS and request they send you a renewal packet. Then you will have to send in a check (personal checks are accepted, now) when you send the package back.
