Re: Jurisdiction

The reason you want a school to have its own Police is
1. So it wont cause too much of a Ruckus for the local PD to be sending the PD to the School all the time
2. you want the officers to know the Kids, so that kids are taught they can go to the police for help, and so th officers know who is a REAL threat and who isnt. Example in Coppell they had to Taze a kid because they knew he was dangerous, in other situations they might have tried to take the kid by force, hurting themselves and the kid.

But, stay on your school, leave me alone.

The "School" police should have jurisdiction in, the school, and maybe a mile within the school.
But giving them power in almost every COUNTY in Texas? Too much. But thats just one mans opinion.
You sound totally paranoid with that statement. I wouldn't worry about it until I heard about the abuse of such authority.
Paranoid? Why would I be paranoid ?, I have a gun.

That makes Mark's point even stronger that school police jurisdiction should be the campus and adjacent streets. They can arrest for felonies and class A/B misd anywhere in Texas so restricting their jurisdiction doesn't limit their power to protect the school, the students and the employees. But it sounds like they're not doing that if they're giving someone a traffic ticket for cutting across a nightclub parking lot on the other side of the county.

Why does a school need ANY police? And especially why should they have any power once off school property?

Why don't schools just use the regular police? (Or are school cops kinda like Paul Blart -- mall cop? :mrgreen: )
Almost every school has a "Police Department" now. There are ALOT of different police and police like agency's in this state alone. Heck even the IRS have guns now.
Why not use local cops? Because a normal cop could get pulled across the city/county to respond to a call, and the schools would rather have a cop or two who are there all the time. Thus my argument that we dont need them to have "Power" all over the county when we really only need them for the schools.

gigag04 wrote:Mr. Roth - I was finding the same in looking through the PC, GC, and CCP. That's as far as I could look with the time I had.

I know my friends that work A&M's UPD have jurisdiction in any county that Texas A&M holds property...which is all but like 3 counties in the state I believe. That makes them like state police of sorts...almost.
I cant see that being an overstepping of power, not at all. :roll:

Transportation Code Section 545.423. CROSSING PROPERTY.

(b) An operator may not cross or drive in or on a sidewalk, driveway, parking lot, or business or residential entrance at an intersection to turn right or left from one highway to another highway.
It seems it's also illegal to lock your keys in your car.

Sec. 545.404. Unattended Motor Vehicle.
An operator may not leave the vehicle unattended without:
(1) stopping the engine;
(2) locking the ignition;
(3) removing the key from the ignition;
(4) setting the parking brake effectively; and
(5) if standing on a grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the highway.
Some Dumb dumb at one of my old jobs came into the store as I was going to lunch.
He left his door unlocked and his car running.
I opened his door, turned off the motor and put the keys in the Drivers side door.
I came back 30 minutes later and he still hadnt come back from inside! I should have just stole his car

Re: Jurisdiction

Here is what I assume happened
The Duncanville Officers were on TOO long of a Lunch break, they saw you "breaking" a law in theory, they pulled you over.
Then when their boss asks them "Where were you"
"We pulled over a dangerous guy, he was a willy one, almost had to pull my gun out"

Doesnt it make you feel good to know they are out there protecting and serving? :grumble
