Some years ago, I bought my son a Redline (brand) bicycle. It was all red and yellow. It cost me all
of my discretionary spending for that month. After about the second weekend, while we were at an
aunt's house, it was taken. It had been locked with cable to a home-made engine lift (A-frame) inside
of a locked garage. When we came home, it was gone. The cable was gone. The lock was gone.

But I want to talk about feelings. These events totally change the way one feels about loss due to theft.
Before this happened, I was cognizant that theft was wrong. After this happened, it was personal.
According to a psychologist, I was suppose to work my way through disbelief, anger, grief and
reconciliation. (Since less than 40 years have passed, I have not had time to work past anger).
Your son would probably appreciate any words of consolation that you can offer.
