Thought I would update on my situation at work. Still no signs up but that is only because the company that will do the signs has not been able to get there yet (apparently very busy). However, I have never seen so many security people in the lobby of the building before. There have been a few in the tunnels in the past but never in the lobby of the building. Many look like off duty police in suits. There are some "security" in their uniforms (have never seen them in the lobby before either). Then an on duty HPD in uniform was stationed at the elevators for the floors above ours when we went to lunch. We got a notice that there was a "security issue" within the space of one of the tenants in that section of the building and that HPD would be there for one to two weeks.

I have appealed to HR to get a "hall pass" on the 30.06. First response in NO! I am appealing up the ladder. I don't hold out much hope. Was also told that now I can't have a pistol in my vehicle when I use it for company business travel. They were really stirred up over this open carry thing.

Then, while walking through to tunnel to get to the bus stop after work, there was some weirdo walking around cursing at the top of his voice. Things are really getting strange, sure wish I was not disarmed.

What was the policy concerning handguns BEFORE OC? Did your company expressly allow handguns CC'd, or were they just like a LOT of companies and simply didn't give much thought to it? Most companies....whether posted or not, still have/had policies (in employee handbooks) prohibiting weapons (to include handguns). If that was the case it might be inaccurate to claim that OC caused the demise of CC.

The building that our office is in was not posted (nor were the floors that we occupy). That is unique for our family of companies but it is what it is (or was). The policy is worded such that the building has to be posted for restrictions to apply (if required by state law). Other locations that I have worked at for my employer were posted but they were buildings/sites owned 100% by the company. In our case, we lease floors in this building.


I will not argue that OC has caused many businesses to now decide what their position will be with regards to allowing or disallowing handguns (regardless the mode of carry). I think to some degree that is what we are seeing.

You do realize that your company can grant individuals 'permission' to carry on the premises, exclusive of the signs?

I am aware of that and am already working on that option but have no idea how that will play out.

IF their posture was to allow CC before, then I wouldn't think you'd have any problem getting permission.

I don't see OC a clear advancement. Actually, I don't see it as an advancement. What I would see as an advancement is the right to carry anywhere that LEO can carry. That would be something worth having, not OC that gets so limited that it is of no use and increases the limitations on concealed carry.

You folks are missing the point. You may win over some of the "normal" folks but you will never win over the CEOs/lawyers that put up the 30.06 signs for larger corporations (you won't even get access to them to talk with them). Once these (30.06) are up, they are there to stay. Many of these folks (CEOs) in downtown Houston never gave 30.06 a thought because I guess they thought that everyone was like them (not into guns and cc).

I don't know what else I can say, it you don't get it now, you won't ever get it (unless you get moved to an office in downtown Houston and loose all rights to carry).

You must live in a very isolated part of the state. Here in Houston, once the signs are up, they are not ever going to come down. All open carry did was wake the liberals up in Houston to the fact that they could be putting up signs. I see more signs going up in the tunnels in downtown Houston every day. With every new sign, someone else asks what that is all about and gets the idea that they should post as well.

The lid is off this can of worms and it will never go back. I hope the right to walk around looking like Wyatt Earp is worth it to the open carry folks because a lot of us are loosing our right to concealed carry and it may cost some of us our lives for your privilege to play cowboy.

I never gave much though to the "open carry" thing until yesterday afternoon. Got an email from work telling us that not only are 30.07 signs going up over the weekend on our office building but 30.06 as well. What makes this even more frustrating is I have yet to see a single open carry. I hope the folks that made such a big deal out of open carry are happy because it is costing more than a few of us our right to carry concealed and protect ourselves in many places. And to the open carry folks, no, getting a new job is not an option unless you will make me whole financially. I am 60 and 5 years away from retirement. I will adamently oppose anything that comes out of the OCT group/organization going forward and will write my legislators stating that. Wish this open carry thing had never happened. Makes me wonder if the OCT folks are antigun wolves in sheep's clothing.
