I didn't have time to look this up earlier, but here's an example of how horrendous they are: http://www.anjrpc.org/fopalawsuit.htm

A man was flying from Utah to Pennsylvania with a handgun in his checked luggage. He had to change planes in New Jersey. The airline screwed up his luggage, and he ended up in the pokey for possessing a handgun without a state license.

Federal law says you should be able to carry an unloaded, cased weapon during interstate trips, but New Jersey authorities do not respect that. They also have restrictions on magazine size.
