I've seen similar articles in big-city newspapers that had the tone of "look what those crazy rednecks are up to." I don't get that impression from this article.
Web sites are an integral part of newspapers now, and they get paid for visiting eyeballs. Whatever reason the L.A. Times had for running this article, it brought eyeballs.

I don't know anything about the author, Nicholas Riccardi; and I couldn't find anything useful through Google.
Newspaper editorial boards tend to be anti-RKBA, but there must be some reporters who haven't drunk the Kool-Aid, like John Stossel.
