Alas, "etching" is not "engraving." I would need a more powerful laser (LOT more power) or a CNC etching setup to engrave steel. Aluminum lowers work nicely because it removes the anodization plus a fraction of the aluminum. I'm definitely investigating CNC engraving, but I don't have the setup to do that right now.

What form does the art need to be in to etch it?

They have to be in vector formats to work best. I use Adobe Illustrator to do the preprocessing. The Gonzales Flag cannon and star were used from a public domain SVG file.

I decided to do something a little different. I made a special laser etch for a lower that has a touch of Brit and Texas in it

The postage cardboard is my low-budget jig that keeps the lower correctly leveled/aligned for the etching.
