I'm sure I'll get slammed for this, but I'd like to offer a different angle to this.

Please remember that the news media likes to distort things. It keeps readers interested if they can embellish it or conveniently leave things out.

Most of my students know that I shoot for recreational purposes. They often tell me about their favorite guns; some even bring in targets to show me.

On my campus, I don't see where it would be a problem if the average student were to draw a gun. However, not all students are average. I have seen some twisted little boogers in my tenure as a middle school special ed teacher. Although rare, I have taught students that I suspect of being either psychopaths or sociopaths. If one of these students were to draw a gun, my antennae would likely come up.
Also, I've seen distrubed children draw pictures or make gestures that may seem innocent, but it turns out to be a veiled threat at other students.

Again, most students aren't drawing guns to make threats, but there is a small minority that would. When we look at it as school personnel, we look particularly close at who the artist is.
