Re: Mosin Nagant

The doc says my shoulder should heal in a few months, but I did have fun  Thanks for the "Mosin Experience." That puppy (M44 Carbine) is one fine gun.

I haven't even gotten mine cleaned up yet.
Never seen the type that fit on the outside of the chamber, rather than in the chamber, but I guess those work as the principle is the same. Also, it looks like you don't need to remove the extractor to use those, so that's a big plus. At an absolute minimum, I would have the FIELD gauge. Thanks for the link.

Edit: Also he has an excellent primer for headspace here:

Mine came with my rifle.
I think you're talking about the firing pin depth gauge, not a set of 3 headspace gauges (GO, NO-GO, and FIELD), unless they came with the rifle.

It looks like Brownell's carries them, if you don't get any other leads.
Thanks. Looks like they carry both the Fosters and the Clymers for 7.62x54R.

Care to point me to an online site that sells M44s, M38s, or 91/59s for about $100?? You can get 91/30s all day under $100, but I've never seen a carbine for that price. Thanks.
I meant 91/30's for $100 since they're much more common. M44's are either nonexistent or $200+.

There were 2 or 3 M44s at the last Ft. Worth gun show, and I think $200+ is a fair price. Haven't seen one in decent condition for much less. But, they're probably out there somewhere. One other thing, where do you Mosin guys get your headspace gauges?

I haven't started the task of cleaning all the crud off of it yet. I'm saving that for my next weekend project.
Like rabbits in the dark. I bought my first one in Jan. Working on number 13 now. A 1941 M39.
I'd like to have either an M38 or 91/59 (don't need a M44 w/bayonet for extra weight). I am concerned about recoil at my age and slight build. Do you use any of the rubber butt pads for the Mosin, and if so, how much recoil do they absorb? Passed up quite a few at the last Ft. Worth gun show in the $200+ range, but might reconsider next time. They are beautiful carbines. TIA
