Yeah, Mel's can get kinda crazy, especially in peak times. Some of the best chicken-fried-steak and chicken-fried-chicken I have eaten as well. Worth the trouble, imo. The very-coarse-hair-in-the-iced-tea at Red Robin pretty much ended the trips there. I even have/had an unused $50 gift card for Red Robin...

Mel's Country Cafe in Tomball is excellent. Red Robin is pretty good for a chain/franchise type place.
