Excellent, our recommendation is to have the pet scanned for a chip at least once a year. You are verifying its still present, works and take note of its location. At the same time, log into the pets profile. Makes sure you remember all the log in info, gives you a chance to upload a new picture, add in details like "limps back right leg" Or "needs insulin shot daily", change fur color notes, ect.
Check the profile also updates the "Last updated" note that we see as rescuers or researchers. If we see a last updated, 2, 5, 7 months ago, we KNOW you are out there and will find you.

Lastly, consider making a contact in your smart phone for each pet.
Chip number, picture, profile log in info, vets name and contact number, numbers for local shelters.
That way you have everything you need to alert chip company, vets, shelters your pup is lost without having to go home and find records, look stuff up.

New years and fireworks go hand in hand across the US. Regrettable fireworks and lost pets also go hand in hand.

Fluffy and Killers best chance of making it home is a microchip and updated pet profile.

Look to low cost shot clinics, rescues, Animal shelter, local FB groups. Most Tractor supply store bring in a Low(ish) cost shot clinic every Saturday.

Look for someone using Smart Tag, Home Again, 24 Pet watch chips..If not one of those three, feel free to post up, PM or email at the addy in my signature and ask.

The issue we have with some chip companies is less the chip, and more the registrant service. Some require you to be a current "Premium" member to update info ($25-75 per year), some have no human in the notification process and limited online info, some dont keep records of who they sell to and that is info we can sometimes use to track down an owner.
One place in particular, AKC...the chip is fine, the service ok, but DO NOT make the profile restricted, they guard that info like it is a national secret..Even to us, the rescues or animal shelters. Denying us the info we need to find you... Clearly you wanted to be found in the event your pet was lost, or you wold not have had a chip implanted and put some contact info out there to be used to reach you.

That's a huge issue, as AKC will send the registered owner an email, make a call and leave a message...Which is enough if contact info is update and your in the country. What they nor any other chip company will do is, track you down using all possible methods and means..Go to the address listed, talk with neighbors, land lords, use paid search services, use public tax records, social medial, related person on social media, LinkedIn and much more.

Yesterday was interesting and Christmas related so thought Id share.
We are asked to come to a local family home and chip the family pet..As the "owner" is filling in the paperwork, she tells her daughter, go ask your dad his email address but dont tell him why.
We have been in situations where only what member of the family wants chipping done, husband or wife, one or the other going through separation, none if it fun.
So I'm now on high alert running the what if's possibilities should a angry husband come storming out to stop this.
The mother in law overhears the email address given to us by the daughter and she says" Oh no, dont use that one, he will find out about his Christmas gift".
Turns out, the pup is a family pet, but he is really "Dads best friend" and the young family wanted to get pup chipped as a Christmas present to dad.
Merry Christmas folks and please, chip, register and keep updated your fur kids profiles.

Very good point..and one I spend countless hours and hundreds of dollars getting past...outdated pet profile contact info.

PLEASE update your pets profile, we suggest once a year, timed with vet visits...Log on to your pets profile, this insures you have the correct lo in info when its not an emergency, and it allows you to update a pet picture, check the profile info to make sure its up to date ,,and very importantly,it changes the date you were last there.. WE use that date to help confirm there is someone to find.
At that same time (vet visit) ask them to scan the pet for their chip.. you want to confirm it not only is present and working but location as they can migrate.
If the pet is lost please add last known location of the chip to your flyers and Vet/shelter notifications. Id love to say all in the rescue / vet / shelter activities do a through scan when a lost pet is found..but reality is many dont, or use a basic scanner that does not read encrypted chips like those from Avid and AKC. So telling the potential finders the pups chip is located over the base of its tail and its an encrypted type may ensure they lost pet found is scanned in a way your pets chip will be found.

Are you sure about this? I only registered my dog when he first got chipped. I don't remember them saying I had to pay each year. I suppose I better check on it. Thanks for the heads up.

It depends on the chip company.
MOST only charge annually for their "Premium " services. Basic registration is for life. Now some do require you to be a current "premium" member to change the pets profile 24pet watch is one of those.....and all of them send you a reminder annually that your pets "Premium " account status has ended , please pay us more to continue, but that is just marketing to get you to sign up for the extras.

Yes Smart Tag (what we use ) and Home Again are one time fee, plus what ever the chipper charges...We do it for free so what we pay for the chip is what we ask for.

There are chips out there that by marketing at least, less effective in prevention of migration.. IOW do not have anti migration technology as part of their chip manufacture.

There is also how/where the chip was implanted and the dogs activity after implanting.
I'll skip how and where, but after is key as well. Fur kid, cat , ferret or dog should be kept calm the first 24 hours after chipping. Allowing the tissue to start its processing of attaching to the chip.

Yesterday, called to scan tow pets found running at large (many of the local police and others call me before they will call Animal Control).
Older pup 1 had a chip, younger pup 2 did not, neither had collars.
Ran the chip number, owner contacted, both dogs were his, he came over and picked them up..Scan to reunification about 15 min. He did not even know they were out he was still at work.. Without a chip, no telling if they would have gotten home at all. There were several miles away from home and many pet parents do not look that far away from home. Both of these pups had collars on them when the owner left the house for the day.. One was found on the property, having been chewed off. The puppy's collar was not found. Collars come off, get chewed off...Chips work

We chipped the puppy on the spot and both now have the best lost and found protection they could have.

If you don’t know the microchip number you can have the pet scan any vet many pet stores or groomers asked him to write the chip number down and again shoot it to me in a message and I’ll tell you everything about the chip to include weather information is up-to-date

Only one of the microchip registration sites charge additional fees annually, and I dont know of any group, rescue, or vet clinic that uses their chips... a few chip registration sites charge an annual fee if you need to change information, so move, change phone number, ect and your last annual membership has expired you'd have to pay it again to make changes. All of the most commonly used chip registration company like Home Again or Smart Tag which is what we use, there are never any additional fees. Just the one time upfront, plus whatever the microchip implanter charges. For our group, that would be just $10 or $12 if a min chip is needed, not a penny more, lifetime registration, free update, s no charge to transfer pet ownership if it comes to that.
A little bit of due diligence and a pet owner can find out what the company will charge them down the road, but like I said most of them it’s nothing to keep the file in the database.

All of that said there is a little mark bit of marketing trickery, most all of the chip registration companies do. They will send you an email once or twice a year with something like "Your premium account" or words to that effect has expired renew HERE.

That has nothing to do with the basic chip registration profile it’s for the extras, free ID tags, free dog collar, pet insurance etc. etc. I wish they didn’t do it but I have to admit they’re in a business to make money and that’s one of the ways they make money

We do it, because, we would want someone to do it for us.

I was hooked, from the very first time I scanned a lost pup, found a chip, called the registration company got owner contact info and called the owner to say.."Are you missing a dog? Yes? OK she is safe, with me and the finder, lets get her home"

I drive a diesel eating truck thousands of miles a year just doing chipping and scanning, more thousands doing transports. We spent $1600 on two scanners, fronted $1000 for chips we sell at cost, spent countless hours on a computer and phone hunting down pet owners, pay for search services, DMV checks so I can find folks. Sat for hours in the sun to gain a lost pups trust so we could rescue, crossed busy roads and highways so I can scan a deceased animal , hoping it has a chip, updated ed info, dreading making the call to an owner...knowing Id want that call over not knowing..

And its worth it every time I get to make that call again. Chips work...

Of note MANY places that implant microchips, Vets, rescues Animal control facilities and others DO NOT REGISTER THE CHIP FOR YOU... Likely they told you that but you did not understand, did not hear, or did but just ready to pay the bill and be home.

We get hundreds of chip scans a year where we find a chip, but it was never registered. PLEASE make sure your chip has been registered and the contact info is updated. Many times I can still find an owner, nut know, registration company, vets, shelters will not make that effort. They will call the phone number listed and if it is out of date, that is it, or at best they will send a letter to the resisted address.
Your fur kids ability to get home rests on a chip properly implanted, the pet parent doing the proper thing after implantation, from keeping the pet calm for 24 hours after chipping, to having the chip checked yearly all the way to accurate and complete contact info on the pet registered profile.


That is passion and concern coming though, please..Not lecture.

Thanks! I can't recall the percentage, but must lost dogs that don't have an ID collar or chip don't make it back home. Also, some registrars have life registrations available. I think I paid around $65 for a lifetime registration.

All registers I know of currently register for life of the dog/chip.

The difference are if they charge for pet profile update or transfer. The company we use ID tag, does not..Its a one time fee, and you can update or transfer to new owner for free, for life.

Some like 24 Petwatch.. your enrollment fee at time of implantation, gets you registered and a member account opened. You can update or transfer your account to new owner for one year, after one year the registered profile is frozen in time... the data is there for folks like me to find and use..but it is what ever it was last update..
If 4 years down the road you get a new phone and address, you will have to pay for another year of "membership" then you can update the pets profile.

If anyone has any questions on their pets chip number, company registered through contact for those company please fell free to reach out.
I deal with this stuff most every day.

Even if in the country and not required I cant recommend enough, please have the pup chipped.

I was talking about El Paso. As a side note, I just called my Vet in Las Cruces NM( whom I have spent thousands of dollars with) and they gave me a “ special” price of $55.00. Well, I live in the country and have 7 cats and three dog ( one chipped from rescue facility) so chipping them all isn’t going to happen.

Yes but the number of failed or rejected chips is so small, its a statistic anomaly at best..... Of course we had just that. I family fur kid I know was chipped correctly, as we did it.. That chip reported as it should almost daily as I chip check our pups when I leave the house to check our two scanners.
One morning, Mr Vegas's chip did not scan.......had my wife use her scanner to double check....sure enough no chip was found.
Mr Vegas and Miss Reba are young active pups, they roughhouse all day..very roughly. Its possible the chip was damaged though not likely as the broken bits of bio glass capsule and electronics inside would likely have caused an abscess. So more likely it was rejected and came out, like a cactus thorn might on your hand after a few days. This too is unlikely as it was in place for many months, if the body was going to reject it...should have happen soon after implant, also we never noticed an open wound, blood, licking, ect.. So that leaves chip failure. Between my wife and I alone we have chipped almost 1,000 pets in the last 2 years....this is the only chip that failed.
