We should try to get Perry to call a special session to deal with the problem
I don't think it will lose steam, if it does, it's not a very important issue. I think it IS an important issue, so if it doesn't get in special session this year then next time will be fine.

As I understand it, there is no "next year" correct? Legislative session is every two years?
Anything happen in between?

I'm fairly new to the 'political scene'.

Re: Front page news at the Houston Chronicle

They even got the "banned places" list correct :

"Current law prohibits the carrying of firearms, even by handgun licensees, into bars, schools, most areas of college campuses and courthouses. Churches can ban them, and governmental bodies can prohibit licensees from carrying pistols into public meetings."

Pretty good article, overall, and it's good to see the issue getting attention!
another quote from the article:
""We're not in the Wild West anymore," Tommie Garza of Houston, executive director of Texans for Gun Safety, said of the governor's idea. "It doesn't seem like the sensible thing to do.""

Can he make a valid point?
He's attempting to make an argument because something doesn't 'feel' right!

A broader article on the subject...
http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=6449437&nav=0s3d
All handguns, licensed or not, are currently banned from bars, restaurants, schools, sporting events, correctional facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, amusement parks, places of worship, governmental meetings and courthouses.

Perry called that nonsense.
this will bring debate
If they left anything in the law to restrict access, I believe it should be jails, prisons and courtrooms, unless you have expressed permission from lawful authority to do so...
No doubt that if this legislation is even considered there will be several restrictions like the above considered. I can't see getting a blanket allowance for carrying 100%.

On KXAN home page there's a poll asking if CHL holders should be allowed to carry anywhere... make it count!

Edit: So far it's 100% YES!

I opened the video up but basically, it is just Gov. Rick saying exactly what's in the article.
I hope there's a little more on the news tonight and maybe more positive response tomorrow from our legislators.

Is it possible it could happen this session??

Perry Calls For Gun-Toting Freedom In Texas

April 30, 2007 08:31 PM
While people across the country have called for gun control in the wake of Virginia Tech, Gov. Rick Perry called for gun freedom Monday.

Perry met with U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt, who is traveling the country to decide how the government can prepare schools for these types of situations.

Perry said Texas should consider allowing licensed, law-abiding citizens to carry their authorized weapon anywhere in the state.

"Whether it's on a college campus or wherever, and frankly, I think it's time for our citizens to be able to protect themselves," Perry said. "The last time I checked, putting up a sign that says, 'Don't bring your gun in here,' for someone who has ill intent on their mind, they could (not) care less."
