A bow shot to the heart/lungs is a VERY humane way to dispatch an animal. I have shot deer and seen them shot on hunting shows where the deer initially "spooks" then looks around trying to figure out what the sound was. They will sometimes resume feeding because they are not aware that they have been shot. Approximately 30-45 seconds later, the animal gets dizzy and passes out due to blood loss.

The only method that could be more humane would be a bullet to the brain at point blank range, which is the normal way to dispatch hogs in a trap. As has been pointed out, this isn't an option for OP since he is in the city limits.
