Unless you have some out of state fliers or advertisements or some such printed up so you can say your just passing thru, like staying the night at a relatives to save money on a hotel as your on your way to Maryland. Then the federal transport stuff would work, but your at the will of an LEO that could be having a bad day.

You cannot legally possess a handgun in New Jersey, whether it is loaded, unloaded, in a lock box or not. No handgun. Period.
Since that is your destination, federal safe passage rules do not apply. You can't even bring it on the trip unless there is somewhere you can stash it outside of New Jersey state lines.
