It doesn't take a whole lot of training to learn how to use a gun, The rules safety rules are simple and shooting at personal defense ranges and acuracy isn't that hard. While good combat training is always a plus, the basics are easily learned at a range with someone reasonably knowledgeable. If she doesn't shoot and doesn't have the fortitude for it, then she doesn't need a gun.
Until she uses and is comfortable with firearms, she needs mace or something like that.
