STUDENT INVOLVED SHOOTING
By Tom Givens
On October 3, 2007 we had the fourth student involved shooting for 2007. This incident involved an attempted armed car-jacking.
Student this time was a male in his early 20’s, went through training at Rangemaster in 2006.
We’ll use his initials, DP. DP was sitting in his car on an apartment complex lot waiting for his girlfriend. Time was about 9:30pm. Location in Raleigh, near Stage and Range Line.
As girlfriend approached the passenger side of his car, four males drove up and two exited their car. One grabbed girlfriend by the hair and punched her, the other produced a fully loaded .22 semi-auto handgun and threatened to shoot her. BG with gun then moved around front of car to driver’s door, where DP was seated. BG punched DP with his non-gun hand and demanded DP “give me everything. DP dropped his car keys out the open car door, and as BG looked down at them, DP drew his handgun and shot BG 3 times in the upper center chest. BG dropped his gun, which bounced under DP’s car, and collapsed. The BG holding
the girlfriend ran off at this point.
The two suspects who had remained in their car got out and pulled the wounded BG into the car and sped off. They dropped him at Methodist North. They then stupidly drove back by the scene, where police were already investigating the shooting. DP pointed them out and they were apprehended, still covered in the wounded BG’s blood. They were arrested. A week later, the shot BG was still on a ventilator—I have not checked on him since.
Once again, a student had the confidence to wait for an opening and then use sudden, explosive violence to overcome a seemingly no-win situation.
He fired 3 shots and got 3 hits. Neither DP nor his girlfriend were injured except for bruises where they were punched. They were congratulated and well treated by the police at the scene.
