Re: Deputy Scot Peterson

It appears Peterson was the first to know about Cruz on school grounds and the gunfire, so Peterson could have acted before the radio calls went out.

Commanding officer initially ordered responding deputies to 'stage' not enter Stoneman Douglas, sources say
At this point, eleven minutes after it was believed Cruz first opened fire, the log indicated one of the commanding officers started ordering responding officers to begin forming a perimeter, which one law enforcement source said would go against all training to first neutralize the threat.

At 2:32 p.m., the dispatch call log indicated the first command to form a perimeter was issued, “17S1…NEED PERIMETER.”

Sources told Fox News the 17S1 insignia on the log that day is important because it is the insignia, or code, for who was making the commands. 17S1 stands for 17 Sierra One.

A short while later, as the dispatch log indicated the whereabouts of the shooter was unknown; the first command to “stage” apparently was given.

2:34:48 p.m., “17S1 STAGE SIDE SAWGRASS.”

Then, three minutes after that staging order, the log indicated the scene was still active as emergency aircrews indicated they would not go because it hadn’t been confirmed the shooter was in custody.

2:38 p.m., “AIR RESCUE ADVISED NOT LAUNCING UNTIL CONFIRMED SUBJ IS IN CUSTODY,” the log read.

At 2:47 p.m., 15 minutes after the first command to form a perimeter was issued and 13 minutes after the first command to stage was issued, the log indicated the SWAT team entered the school.
So the dispatch log shows that, disregarding procedure, "17S1" called for a perimeter and then staging

Re: Deputy Scot Peterson

I believe Paul Howe wrote this article in 2006:

School Shootings “Wait and See” is Not An Option!
...I have witnessed leadership failures in military and law enforcement tactical scenarios for several reasons, the most common being the selection and training process. Legislative and mandated training in political correctness, cultural diversity, racial profiling and dealing with the emotionally disturbed has taken precedence over saving our children. We have failed to train patrol (our first responders) to a higher level. Higher level training for first responders will save civilian as well as law enforcement lives. Many times we focus on liability as an excuse not to train...

You are completely correct to think that charging in alone with a pistol against a rifle is extraordinarily dangerous. Perhaps fatal. A person would need serious skills to win that fight.
You really do not need skills in that situation, and you, singular, do not need to win that fight. You need training like what society pays professionals for. In that position your job is to get in the fight, and pin your target down. That is, force him to stop shooting at children and take cover. Hopefully the rest of your team is maneuvering for the kill. Even if 'you' get pinned instead, that is still time that you have robbed from the shooter and delivered to your team --and others like children who need to run away.

Please forgive my use of the second person. Just used for emphasis!
Could you please share your training and background to give us a perspective on your statement?

Have you considered the fact that the school was full of children that Cruz was trying to kill and "pinning Cruz down" would involve not shooting all the kids in, around, and behind Cruz... while Cruz did not care about shooting the kids caught in the middle... all with the uncertainty of the possibility of multiple school shooters?

In one incident in New York City, 16 shots were fired by police, wounding the suspect 10 times with
9 shooting bystander victims hit by police gunfire. That's reality.

Personally I believe Cruz could have and should have been stopped before he even pulled his weapon out of the bag, but once Cruz pulled the fire-alarm and started shooting it became a very tough situation. A situation we should not make light of. A situation that takes serious skills.

Reading through the reports it appears that Deputy Peterson was well aware that Cruz was a self declared "school shooter" before the shooting happened. Peterson saw the expelled Cruz arrive on campus and instead of moving in behind Cruz and detaining Cruz before Cruz could pull his weapon out of the duffel bag, Peterson chose to "call it in", wait until Cruz started shooting, and stood outside the building for 6 minutes while people were dying. That's how I'm understanding the situation.

Re: Deputy Scot Peterson

Two years ago, according to a newly released timeline of interactions with Cruz’s family, a deputy investigated a report that Cruz “planned to shoot up the school” — intelligence that was forwarded to the school’s resource officer, with no apparent result.

Looks like Deputy Peterson was warned 2 years ago that Cruz “planned to shoot up the school”... and then watched the expelled kid arrive at the school, prohibited bags in tow, and sat by while Cruz did the shooting, even though Peterson had the drop on Cruz.

WOW! Page 4 shows he truly was a "Crime Monitor" :banghead:
[The] Campus Monitor...observed Cruz, who he recognized as a former troubled student, arrive at the high school... Cruz was wearing a maroon shirt, black pants and a black hat...carrying a black duffel bag and wearing a black backpack... radioed his coworker ...that Cruz was walking purposefully towards the 1200 building... stated that within a minute he heard gunshots and called a "Code Red"
Compare Deputy Peterson's actions to the actions of the 3 Americans in "Gun Free" France who had to take on a psychopathic terrorist with an AK47, pistol, 300 rounds of ammo, and knife using only their bare hands link.
