Probably the biggest known hazard in our neighborhood are roaming dogs. The two pit bulls in the yard behind mine have been know to get out and kill livestock a block away. I've not seen those in my yard, but I have looked out the window to see large dogs cross our property. I have no illusions about .22 mag stopping a charging pit bull, BTW.

Glad you were not hurt. I would suggest you consider carrying now, and planning for training. In the situation you describe, things could have gone worse had you not been able to flee. Giving him your money apparently did not end the situation. Producing a loaded firearm might have.
I live in an essentially "no crime" neighborhood, if there is such a thing.
Even so, I always carry at home, especially outdoors. Usually it's a NAA Black Widow revolver in .22mag, or Seecamp .32 ACP.
