Your comment concerning the likely outcome is correct, but I would go beyond "POSSIBLY an officer and myself or my wife", to ALMOST CERTAINLY. How many accounts of a police shootout do you recall where a single individual fired on a group of police officers...whether he wounded/killed an officer or not...that he wasn't met with an overwhelming barrage of return fire from every officer on the scene? If you are opened up on by 4 or 5 guys, wearing body armor, armed with shotguns, pistols and possibly assault rifles, there's very little chance you're coming out of it alive.

And if you do survive the initial shooting, it's not unprecidented that EMS would not be allowed in until it's too late to save you. In the name of safety for EMS of course.
