One guy I know developed bladder cancer. The doctor asked if he smoked and he replied he had quit about five years prior. The doctor told him the bladder cancer was caused by smoking.
I am not saying that smoking is not bad, I am saying I believe they played fast and loose with the statistics like they are doing with guns today.
If someone repeatedly puts out information that is later found to be false pretty soon no one will believe any information from that source.
If you believe the statistics, not smoking is more dangerous than smoking. If you're a smoker, they put down it was caused by smoking. If you never smoked, it was due to second hand smoke, as everyone has been exposed to it at some point in their life. This skews the numbers so that it appears that it's more dangerous to not smoke than it is to smoke. All because they're sure it was due to tobacco smoke some how.
