I first practiced with a big shiny Taurus 45 and passed the TX CHL test with it. But it's too heavy, so I bought a Sigma S&W9VE - a 9mil copy of a Glock. It had so many troubles that it went back to S&W for improvements. While it was gone I bought a Taurus pt111 - also in 9mil. It stumbled at first but after a good cleanup and more exercise it has grown to be my carry.
I think you'll be all right with a Taurus. If it gives trouble, a trip to Miami will take from two to four weeks.
BTW, the Sigma is all right now, too, and I like the DAO action.
