Re: Gun was pointed at us. Should we feel safe ?

Dementia sneaks up on people and families don't want to admit it. Don't be in denial. Too often people end up being diagnosed 5 to even 10 years after the disease has started, which really is too late to do anything to do much of anything. The earlier it's found, the better the chances are of managing symptoms and preserving a good life for everyone.

I don't know how much influence you have, but I would try to get him to see a doctor, it sounds like early on set dementia. I am not a doctor, but I work in an assisted living facility, so I have seen these types of symptoms in others. I know that 55 seems young, but it is not uncommon. There could also be other things causing this erratic behavior, but he definitely needs to be seen by a professional. At the very least, I would make it clear that you and your family will not visit, unless all of the guns are locked away, and that you child will only be there under your supervision. JMHO
if this is a change in behavior, yeh, he needs to be seen. There are things that can be done to help but it has to be diagnosed.

Was this completely out of character? as in, has he ever done anything like this before, has he always been careful with his guns, or was this normal? If this was the first time he's ever done it, what time of day was it? How old is he? Don't go into worry mode, but start paying a little extra attention to him, is it possible he's having a bit of cognitive problems?
Good point - I didn't even think of that.
I am caretaker for my mother-in-law and have become a bit of an arm-chair expert in dementia and Alz, hours upon hours of college level lectures online and an online-college level course. You'd be amazed at the symptoms that are missed years before diagnosis, by doctors.

(These are just my thoughts though, no medical opinion intended.)
