So just to follow up, since I started this one....
Lots of good points about just getting out the way and letting an aggravated driver move along. If the situation allows, I move over. Even on a two lane, I'll move over to the shoulder if the shoulder seems reasonably clear of debris. I like this practice. I've rarely ever seen it outside of Texas, so I feel very "Texan" when I do it. I've also slowed down and moved over to enable someone to more safely pass me in a passing zone. And when I'm on my motorcycle, I get out of the way of aggressive drivers as quickly as I can do so safely, many times that means just twisting the throttle and creating distance, then getting out of the way asap.
In the case of the original post, in a construction zone that I knew was about 2 miles long, I chose to just proceed on my way without making any changes to my driving. I didn't consciously decide that it would cause more trouble than it fixed if I was to turn into a side street and u-turn, but that would have been the only way for me to to let the guy by. There was no shoulder, just two-way traffic in 2 tight lanes with cones on the outside blocking the shoulders and workers on the shoulders. I do recall thinking that since I was already over the limit, speeding up further was not an available solution.
So from what still seems like 2 "reasonable" options, stay the course or turn off the road, I figured just staying the course for another mile or so was the best solution. There were no indicators that the guy was having any emergency, and there was nobody else in his car.
Some other good suggestions about the car cameras.... Definitely going to add that to my wish list for Christmas.
Thanks to all for a good discussion..

True... I only considered that possibility after the fact.Keith B wrote:I find it best to sit there with a straight face and be dialing the phone. That usually deescalates the event pretty quickly. Laughing may make the person think you were purposely driving slow to make him mad.
I wasn't laughing or reacting to him in any way while I was in front of him. Didn't slow down, didn't speed up.
Just pointed at the speed limit sign the one time.
"In the moment" when he stopped his car in front of me, I thought it was too-funny that the guy was soooo upset about my driving not-far-enough OVER the speed limit.

Road Rager Didn't Like Me Driving the Speed Limit
I was driving through a construction zone this morning. Speed limit is 20, signs posted every 200 yards, workers visible. It's an area where one side of the road is closed, and the remaining two lanes are remarked for opposing traffic. I drive this road daily. Not only is enforcement high (it's unusual NOT to see someone pulled over) but several times I've had to slam on the brakes because some putz decided to pass and I had to brake to avoid an accident.
So I'm doing a few miles over 20.
Guy zooms up behind me, almost touching my rear end. At least half his hood was not visible in my rear view, he was so close. After a few seconds I see him yelling at me and flipping me the bird. I casually point to the speed limit sign as we pass it.
We spend the next 2 miles like this. Him gesturing furiously and me riding along with my cruise control set a few above 20. I always use my cruise control in known high-enforcement areas, since my foot can have a mind of its own sometimes.
When the construction ends, he immediately veers right and speeds up. I speed up to 30 (the new speed limit). He zooms in front of me and stomps on his brakes. Within 100 yards we're both stopped in the leftmost lane with 3 additional lanes of traffic passing to my right.
I start laughing. Not just a chuckle. A huge belly laugh. Then I give him one of these....
He was madder than mosquitoes in a mannequin factory.
After about 10-15 seconds he turned and crossed 3 lanes of traffic to make a right and leave.
I hope his day went better from there.
If it was you....... Thanks for the laugh.
Now for my question.... Seriously... Is laughing and doing this a "failure to deescalate".?
