I have seen several shoplifting incidents, but at major "upscale" department and specialty stores, not at Walmart.
It's OK to shop there. Your risks are no greater there than anywhere else.

Which is why I keep my head on a swivel as I make my way to and from the various places I go. (Sure Walmart parking lots aren't safe, but that's true for any of the large retail shopping / parking lots)

Doing so not only helps prevent being taken by criminal surprise, but has also kept me from being run over by those who think nothing of flying through a parking lot like it's the freeway.
