Re: APD Shot and killed buddy's dog

...if a person wrongly kills one of my dogs, I'm going to see to it that they pay a penalty...as much as I can get put on them within the law...and I would sue for money damages...no matter who it is...if an LEO, a meter reader, or any other person has reason to kill one of my dogs that I have not properly restrained...it's my fault...and I'll just have to suck it up and bury him...I won't give up my right to have emotions and love my dogs...and I won't give up or fail to act on my legal rights...but neither will I neglect my legal responsibilities...

The Chief has a point about the slain officer, but it looks like they are going to gloss over the main problem of Officer Griffin's contact in this incident. Why did he draw his gun on someone that was not threatening him or anyone else? I still think that even if he'd had his gun holstered when the dog came out he would have drawn and shot first and asked questions later.

...EXACTLY...this has NOTHING to do with the slain officer...but that does shift some attention...as does the dog...

Re: APD Shot and killed buddy's dog

...I assume you mean people...that's not surprising, considering how often LEOs point their guns at humans...and how seldom CHLs do...
I sincerely believe that TV and movies have programmed/desensitized officers to pull and point far more often than we ever did in the 70s...it was FAR more common to see an officer approach a suspect with his hand on his holstered weapon rather than to see him with it out and pointed...unless there was a weapon or violence present...it just wasn't done the way it is today...

The difference between Dallas fire (all firefighters/paramedics) and Dallas PD/911 (civilian) dispatchers is shocking. The anecdote you related is not that unusual.
Keith B wrote: Bottom line, the 911 operators may not be as good at sizing up the caller info and what they pass to the dispatcher or even out to an officer via their MDT may be incorrect or misleading in some cases.
Kinda dating yourself there, it's MDC now not MDT but I rmemebr when there was neither

...that hurts my feelings...I wondered what MDT meant!!!...the only exposure I had to any modern data equipment was when our Commissioner of Public Safety bought Xerox printers for the cars...mounted them backwards where we couldn't read the paper tape they printed on without stopping the car...then they were obsolete within a year or so...no parts available...

Re: APD Shot and killed buddy's dog

...I agree about the dash cam facts..
...as to the dispatch/caller problem...I know both sides of it...from 40 years ago and the last ten years...
...in the 70s, land lines and radio w/o computers were it...caller called in...dispatcher asked/relayed whatever they thought of...if I had $1 for every gun call I went on without any info on the presence of a gun being passed on to me...I'd be off the rest of the year...sometimes the caller told and the dispatcher failed to relay...sometimes it just didn't come up in the call at all...we'd commonly chew the dispatcher out on the radio for not passing CRITICAL info to us..."pouting" at officers on the street in the middle of the night was common...and dangerous...

...since I have lived where I do...94...I have called both 911 and the non-emerg. number many times, given the dispatcher(same switchboard answers both numbers) proper and detailed information...answered all questions...spelled and repeated...and the officer got there with only an address and name...no details whatsoever...or details that didn't come up in the conversation at all...but the dispatcher "read into" what was said...I've had the Chief's sec'y and the call center supv go back and read the tapes...verifying everything I said right down to attitudes and tone of voice...and it goes on...one day, it'll get an officer killed, or into a career-ruining situation without necessary info...
...I believe the solution to the problem is to have the officers on the street rotate into the call center for a week at a time, and therefore have street-experienced ops asking AND PASSING ON the necessary info, fully realizing how important accuracy and details are to the man out there in the street...but it will seldom happen due to budget/personnel problems...so the guys out there pick up the tab...and do the best they can with what they're given...just like 40 years ago...some departments are better...some are worse...

...this case, unless the dispatcher added considerably to what the 911 caller clearly said...did not justify what was done...period...if the dispatcher turned what the caller is recorded as saying into a situation where the officer was justified in doing what he did...they would have made a big deal about firing the dispatcher to put it to rest...and both the 911 incall and the dispatched info are recorded in the system...when all is said and done, this one will be on the shoulders of the responding officer...even though he was given the wrong address...

Re: APD Shot and killed buddy's dog

...only dog lovers understand how much you can love a dog...I hope I die before my two do...if one of my dogs would be shot wrongly, I'd probably be a baaaaaaaaaad man...this is highly emotional from all perspectives, but more people are upset about the dog than that a man minding his own business on his own property got to look down the big black hole for no good reason...and that's really the bigger issue...and needs the most corrective action...humans ARE still more valuable than dogs...I think...

...from what I read, dogs can't cry so being sprayed causes them pain longer...this story reads like the dog looked like a nail and he had his hammer in his hand...all his anguished jabbering afterwards and running the homeowner for wants/warrants was a weak attempt to coverup his screwup...totally irrelevant to the call he was supposed to be on...that 21 mins of audio is pathetic...and I'm not cop bashing...I worked the streets for 8 years and trained at least 8 good rookies personally...I've earned the right to complain when a cop doesn't do it right...calling this one out isn't not loving the police...it's hating it when one's poor performance makes it tougher on the majority...

Re: APD Shot and killed buddy's dog

...there's nothing been presented to hint that dispatchers told him anything different than what the caller(on tape) said...that's just another "whatif"......if ignoring the known facts that the 911 tape provides seems to support your opinion, go for it...as the facts that we ARE given come together...it stinks like old fish!!!
