Re: January 2011 Applications

Congratulations! :cheers2: And double so for the broad spectrum of places where you have carried. I mostly carry to/from work and now don't worry too much about being a stand-out while carrying. I do remind myself every morning that dedicated responsibility is needed while carrying. Keep up the good work.

So far this weekend I've carried into PF Changs, Cheesceake factory, Cheaper than dirt, Cabella, and Central Market. I'd say thats quite a start. It's really strange carrying a gun. I find myself tugging on my shirt to make sure it's down. I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Re: January 2011 Applications

License in mailbox today (Feb. 16) :anamatedbanana . Postmark is Feb. 15, but states pre-sorted first class. I suspect that is the reason for delay between status showing mailed and actual mailing. Perhaps the mailroom has to wait for enough outgoing mail to pre-bundle for the lower rates (35.7 cents instead of 44 cents). From class to license in hand it took only 25 days! Good luck to all still waiting and hang in there, your license IS in the mail.

Re: January 2011 Applications

I am now (Feb. 12, 2011) up to status: Mailed. I know that probably means: (speculation) in the mail room to be inserted into envelope then mailed in next batch of pre-sorted envelopes when enough to a common postal zone have been generated so as to get a discounted postage rate (/speculation), but it is progress!
Happy weekend all,

So the DPS is still perking along quite fast in processing new licenses and I can look forward to seeing a picture of my ugly mug in the mail pretty soon.

I just found this nice forum and signed up. It looks like there is a treasure trove's worth of information to read here. What follows is the time line for my CHL application submission so far:
Online application submitted to DPS (My instructor had us do this ahead of time): Jan. 17
Class completed: Jan. 22
All forms to DPS in Austin (It was part of the class fee for the instructor to drop them off): Jan. 24
As of Jan. 31, the only non-green item is Background check: Under review

It is all is going quite swiftly for a government licensing operation.

Re: January 2011 Applications

Hang in there! I am sure it is just a combination of slow to mail and mail moving a bit slow due to the bad weather. :txflag:

There is no way it takes 8 to 10+ days for the "mailed" mail to be delivered 200 miles away.
I wonder if telling the truth means anything to them at all. :banghead:

Re: January 2011 Applications

And if you think that was quick, status is now moved to: Manufacturing (Feb. 10, 2011). Maybe our fearless forum leader will want to add a new CHL arrival time of 0-30 days to his processing time survey. I guess it is well past time to get that new holster broken in!

Re: January 2011 Applications

I was looking into joining an Austin area rifle range and they mandate a self-run Computerized Criminal History check as part of the process. Basically you go to the TX DPS site, sign up for an account and run your own information through to see what, if anything, pops up, then include the printout in your application packet. I don't know if this is only what DPS uses for CHL screening, but if you have any background, you might give it a go if you want to see how it is being reported. Note, it costs a few $$ to run. It seem unlikely, but I don't know if a search in of itself is recorded as information as it is for credit check data. Alas, my own background is so devoid of any malfeasance that I won't even bother checking. ;-) I just hope that as I am a small business government contractor I don't fall in some odd duck category for the FBI part, though NICS approved me tout suite last firearm purchase. Happy waiting all!

As someone somewhat close to an agency of government, I can give a reasonable answer.

They have your fingerprints, so they can check against databases of known offenders and unsolved crimes. They will use your other information to verify identity and check for records with the FBI, State, County, and City. Anything that pops up or that you included in your application will need to be fully documented with paperwork including dispositions. All of these things will take time, so the more things involved, the more time required.

For the amount of money involved in the application, the DPS will likely not run down paperwork; they will most probably send you a letter requesting clarification if they have a question. Long story short, if you have been a bad guy in the past, how long ago, what, why, where. If you've only been a little bit bad (as defined by chl qualifications) and that was a long time ago, you will probably still be ok. And don't forget to pay your taxes and student loans! :thumbs2:

Re: January 2011 Applications

I heartily agree! I would like to know the process for the background check as it is actually conducted. I am not (just) being impatient, but due to the same traits that made me a scientist, I am generally curious about how pretty much everything works. If this is discussed in another thread, please let me know. I would guess offhand that the time difference is likely due to variable response times of the county LE rather than FBI, unless the applicant is an odd duck. For example, I am in Hays county. Are there statistics on background check times broken down by county anywhere? Anyone care to clue the clueless in on the details of that part of the process?
In all seriousness....only thing waiting on it Background check. What all is involved with background check? Run a criminal history and check local county for anything?
